German investigators are looking into evidence that a sabotage squad used Poland as a base of operations to blow up the Nord Stream pipeline in the Baltic Sea.
According to the Wall Street Journal, a 15-meter-long boat called Andromeda was used by a gang of Ukrainian saboteurs to infiltrate Polish territorial seas.
According to the publication, the crew of this ship detonated explosives in Nord Stream 1 before sailing to Poland.
Data from Andromeda’s radio and navigation equipment, as well as satellite phones and Gmail accounts allegedly used by the criminals, are among the evidence.
“Taken together, the details show that the ship sailed around each of the sites where the explosions later occurred, evidence that strengthens investigators’ belief that Andromeda was instrumental in last year’s pipeline destruction,” according to the publication.
The Washington Post reported earlier this week that the US administration knew of a covert Ukrainian military plan to strike pipelines from a European intelligence agency.
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky publicly rejected this, stating that Ukraine would never behave in this manner.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 highlighted Europe’s dependency on Russian natural gas. The collapse of the Nord Stream pipelines accelerated the switch to other energy sources.
