HIROSHIMA, Japan, May 20 (Reuters)
On Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime official Giorgia Meloni met at the Group of Seven nations meeting, hoping to turn the page after a French official accused Rome of mishandling the migrant surge.
In early May, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin stated Meloni’s right-wing administration had been unable to handle the migration problems for which she was elected, and that she had deceived to voters about her ability to stop the migrant crisis.
This caused Rome to demand an apology.
The two presidents met for 45 minutes at the G7 summit on Saturday. Macron appeared to question Meloni on the floods that ravaged the north of her country this week.
According to insiders, she would leave the meeting in Hiroshima a day earlier to lead the reaction.
A French presidential spokesman briefing media said the two presidents discussed Ukraine, but also migration and Tunisia.
“There was widespread discussion that demonstrated our convergence of views on critical issues, particularly Ukraine, but also Tunisia,” the source added.
The two agreed that Tunisia required financial assistance to stabilize the situation and control migratory flows northward. /Reuters
