The strongest storm in the last 100 years is expected to rock Flensburg in the next few hours, experts say
The states of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are already affected, with at least three cities – Flensburg, Kiel, and Lübeck – already flooded in the streets and coastal areas.
The storm in the Baltic Sea is expected to peak this evening, with water levels rising above one and a half meters along the entire coast of Schleswig-Holstein, Bild writes.
A severe storm surge is occurring on the Baltic Sea coast in Schleswig-Holstein. The Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) announced that the water level along the entire coast would rise 1.50 meters or more above the average water level.
In Flensburg, the water level rose to 1.99 meters above normal on Friday evening. “The last time there was such a flood there was in 1904,” said Ines Perlet-Markus from BSH. There is also an exceptional flood situation on the Baltic Sea coast in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
As the BSH announced on Friday afternoon, the highest levels in Flensburg, Travemünde, and Wismar were expected early this evening. As a result, the storm surge subsided again after midnight and fell below one meter to the normal water level by Saturday morning. /TelegraphNews
