Slovaks choose today between pro-Russian candidate Fico and pro-Western liberals

Slovaks will go to the polls today to choose their next prime minister

The election is seen as a test of the country’s commitment to pro-Western values, as the two main candidates are seen as representing opposing visions for Slovakia’s future.

The frontrunner in the election is Robert Fico, who served as prime minister from 2006 to 2018. Fico is a populist politician who has close ties to Russia.

He has been critical of the European Union and NATO and has called for Slovakia to adopt a more neutral foreign policy.

Fico’s main challenger is Zuzana Čaputová, a pro-Western liberal politician who served as Slovakia’s president from 2019 to 2023.

Čaputová is a lawyer and environmental activist who has been a vocal critic of corruption and populism.

She has pledged to keep Slovakia firmly anchored in the European Union and NATO.

The election is expected to be close, and the outcome will depend on the turnout of voters. If the turnout is low, Fico is likely to win.

However, if the turnout is high, Čaputová has a chance of winning.

The outcome of the election will have a significant impact on Slovakia’s future.

If Fico wins, Slovakia is likely to become more isolated from the West and more aligned with Russia.

If Čaputová wins, Slovakia is likely to remain firmly anchored in the European Union and NATO.

Voting centers opened at 7:00 a.m., while voting will close at 10:00 p.m.
