Official results from Guatemala’s first-round presidential election, held late last month, will be disclosed next week, the country’s electoral court announced on Thursday, after a lengthy delay caused by party disputes
According to a court official, the final presidential election results from the June 25 poll did not alter.
Sandra Torres of the center-left National Unity of Hope (UNE) party received 15.8% of the vote, while Bernardo Arevalo of the Seed Movement, also of the center-left, received 11.8% of the vote.
Both are poised to vote in a runoff election on August 20 because no contender received a simple majority.
Nine parties, including UNE, challenged the first-round results, claiming that votes were tampered with, causing the country’s highest court to order a contentious ballot review.
Concerns about the evaluation were quickly aired by international organisations and foreign governments.
The Organisation of American States, based in Washington, announced earlier this week that it will return its observer team to Guatemala to monitor the process./Reuters
