Greece wants to change the EU-Turkey migrant deal

Greece wants to change the EU-Turkey migrant deal

Athens wants to revamp the EU-Turkey migrant deal, which was signed in 2016 in an attempt to reduce the number of migrants and refugees crossing the Aegean Sea into Greece

The deal has been controversial, with some critics arguing that it is inhumane and that it has led to the deaths of many migrants.

Greece is now proposing a number of changes to the deal, including:

  • Increasing the number of refugees that Turkey takes in from Greece.
  • Providing more financial assistance to Turkey to help it care for refugees.
  • Improving the conditions for refugees in Turkey.
  • Creating a new mechanism for relocating refugees from Turkey to other EU countries.

The Greek government argues that these changes are necessary to make the deal more effective and humane. The government also argues that the changes are necessary to reduce the burden on Greece, which has been disproportionately affected by the migrant crisis.

The EU Commission has said that it is open to discussing changes to the deal but has also stressed the importance of respecting international law and human rights. The Commission has also said that it is important to ensure that any changes to the deal are sustainable and effective.

The Turkish government has not yet commented on the Greek proposals. However, in the past, Turkey has said that it is open to negotiating changes to the deal, but only if the EU provides more financial assistance and if it agrees to take in more refugees.

It is unclear whether the EU and Turkey will be able to agree on changes to the deal. However, the Greek proposal is a sign that both sides are willing to talk. If the two sides are able to reach an agreement, it could help to reduce the number of migrants and refugees crossing the Aegean Sea and improve the conditions for refugees in Turkey.
