Alan Arkin died at the age of 89

Alan Arkin, the Academy Award and Tony Award-winning actor, died at the age of 89.

His death was confirmed to PEOPLE exclusively by his sons Adam, Matthew, and Anthony, who issued a joint statement on behalf of the family:

“Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man.”

He was cherished and will be sorely lost as a loving husband, father, grandpa, and great grandfather.”

Arkin most recently costarred in Netflix’s The Kominsky Method with Michael Douglas, receiving Emmy nominations in 2019 and 2020, as well as Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations in 2020 and 2021.

Arkin portrayed Edwin Hoover, the dysfunctional family’s grandfather, in Little Miss Sunshine (2006). His part, which lasted barely 14 minutes, earned him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

Arkin received his fourth Oscar nomination for his performance in Ben Affleck’s 2012 political drama Argo.

He portrayed legendary producer Lester Siegel, known for his keen wit and stinging line delivery.

Adam Arkin, 66, is a well-known actor and director who has appeared on TV shows such as Chicago Hope, 8 Simple Rules, and Sons of Anarchy.

Alan Wolf Arkin was a screenwriter, director, and actor from the United States.

Throughout his eight-decade career, he garnered several awards, including an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Tony Award.
