The agreement inside the European Union (EU) to reform the laws governing immigration and asylum seekers was deemed unacceptable by Viktor Orban, the prime minister of Hungary.
“Brussels abuses its authority. They intend to move the refugees forcibly to Hungary.”
“They aim to forcibly convert Hungary into a country of migrants, and that is unacceptable,” Orban declared on June 9.
The two primary legislative measures for immigration and asylum that the interior ministers of the EU member states agreed upon yesterday should serve as the cornerstones of any reforms in this area.
There is a chance for mandatory assistance between EU nations to materialize in one of two ways.
Priority should be given to EU nations sharing housing for asylum seekers, especially those arriving in Greece and Italy and other EU periphery nations.
Maria Malmer Stenergaard, Sweden’s minister of migration, said that her nation’s plan, which allows nations that reject immigration to pay 20,000 euros per immigrant, was accepted.
Eight years ago, after more than a million individuals entered Europe as refugees from the Syrian crisis, the European asylum system broke down.
Overcrowding at reception centers in Greece and Italy led to an EU political crisis.
Since then, the 27 nations that make up Europe have been discussing who should be held accountable for illegal immigrants and if other nations should be obligated to assist them.
The new legislative measures on migration and asylum have to receive the support of a qualified majority, or two-thirds of the member states, which are home to two-thirds of the EU’s nearly 450 million citizens.
Hungary was one of the nations that abstained.
“The EU is eliminating the opinions of member countries about who lives in their territories” according to Bence Retvari, deputy minister of interior of Hungary.
The member states will vote on their united stance on two legislative measures that deal with the issues of immigration and asylum before discussions with the European Parliament begin.
By the June 2024 elections for the next European Parliament, it is anticipated that the package of legislation recommendations on immigration and asylum would be enacted.
